GEOSTAT

The GEOSTAT projects were a suite of ESSnet initiatives conducted between 2010 and 2022 to promote grid-based statistics and, more generally, to work towards integrating statistical and geospatial information into a common information infrastructure for the European Statistical System. Funded by Eurostat and executed by member states in collaboration with the European Forum for Geography and Statistics (EFGS), these projects aimed to enhance the coherence and utility of geospatially enabled data.

GEOSTAT 1 primarily focused on developing common guidelines for the collection and harmonised production of grid-based statistics within the European Statistical System. As the projects progressed through GEOSTAT 2, 3, and 4, the scope gradually expanded to include recommendations for the underlying infrastructure necessary for geospatially enabled statistics. GEOSTAT 4 culminated in the creation of an implementation guide for the Global Statistical Geospatial Framework (GSGF) in a European context, named GSGF Europe
