About EFGS

European Forum for Geography and Statistics

European Forum for Geography and Statistics – EFGS started as a voluntary cooperation between National Statistical Institutions (NSIs) in the Nordic countries in 1998 on use of geographic information systems (GIS) and statistics.

Today EFGS has national contact persons from more than 40 states and territories, having annual conferences and meetings. European Forum for Geography and Statistics (previously called European Forum for Geostatistics) activities are mainly concentrated on the development of the best practices in the production of geostatistics in Europe.

There are no bindings for membership, except national contact persons have to be employees at either National Statistical Institutes or National Mapping or Cadastral Agencies.

The vision and program of EFGS
Lars Backer, initiator and co-founder of EFGS, introduced the Japanese proverb: “Vision without action is a daydream, action without vision is a nightmare” to the EFGS.

Lars Backer presented in 2012 an overriding program for the period 2013-2017. This program was adopted at the EFGS Conference in Prague, the Czech Republic on the 26 October 2012.
