Climate statistics at LAU 1 and NUTS III levels (PT)

Use case adapted from the UN-GGIM Europe report on “Data Integration – Definition of priority user needs for combinations of data” published in October, 2015.

Statistics Portugal produces annual air temperature and precipitation statistics at more detailed territorial level as part of the publishing of climate variables for official administrative spatial units – municipality (LAU 1) and NUTS III levels. Data are disseminated annually in the Regional Statistical Yearbooks, which are the key publications regarding statistical data disseminated at regional and municipal levels. Climate variables are an important tool to monitor climate change and to achieve zonal indicators to monitor development at regional and local level.

Data on annual air temperature and precipitation correspond to estimates, based on spatial interpolation methods, carried out by the Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute (IPMA), under the scope of the collaboration protocol with Statistics Portugal. The results refer to estimation and prediction of spatially continuous phenomena by defining an administrative unit, using data for a limited number of spatial locations. Results are obtained by interpolating the values registered by the operating weather stations through an ordinary kriging.
