OBJECTIVE
This document provides a brief description of methodology and source data used to estimate the residential population in Urban Atlas 2012 polygons. The estimation of population is done by a combination of results from two procedures – aggregation procedure and areal interpolation procedure where the remaining (after aggregation) population counts at a given ‘source’ geometry are transferred to the Urban Atlas ‘target’ geometry. The proposed algorithm has the advantage to use the available point based population data.
