Norway

Statistics Norway publishes different statistics which may be displayed as maps. In addition to ready made maps (for copy and paste), geodata is published which may be used in your own geographical information system for further analysis.

Statistics and services attached to maps may be divided by different types of geographical units; administrative units, dynamic delineations and grids. All data in UTM33/WGS 84. See bottom of page for grid statistics.

Statistics by administrative units

Population change

Statistics has traditionally been attached to administrative or statistical divisions of the country. Examples are municipalities and counties, and their aggregations, or statistcal units and parts of cities. Regional codes for these units may be found under “General” in the Database for Standard Classifications.

For most users the easiest entrance to map presentations will be the map functionality in the StatBank. Please see the user guide for more information. In addition stand alone programmes, called PX-Map and PC-Axis, may be downloaded free of charge. These software packages enables users to work with own statistics and more functionality.

Statistics on grids

Dwellings on grid

In many occasions it is more convenient to display statistics on a fixed geographical grid. For this purpose Statistics Norway has defined a national standard for statistical grids. The advantage of using such a grid is that the geographical units are fixed in shape and size, while other geographical units tend to differ both in time and space, e.g. municipalities due to changes in borders.

For more information about grid statistics, see Documents 2009/9.

(2) Grids by counties
(3) Grids covering all mainland Norway, and some cover also Svalbard and seaterritories

Statistics and dynamic delineations

Urban settlements and centre zones

In some cases it is more interesting to follow spatial development for phenomenon’s that do not follow administrative borders over time, and were fixed grid are not useful, by using dynamic delineations. Examples are delineations of centre zones and urban settlements.
