The document describing the results of the project exploring how data collection for European cities and functional urban areas can be improved is available to download.

A pilot project investigating opportunities to enhance city statistics by means of Labour Force Survey data and mobile phone data was carried out by a consortium of 5 statistical institutes: INSEE (FR), Destatis (DE), Statbel (BE), Statistik Austria (AT) and Statistics Netherlands (NL).

The project aimed to understand whether:

1) the Labour Force Survey (LFS) can provide a limited set of annual indicators for functional urban areas,

2) whether big data can estimate commuting flows or population flows between municipalities or between statistical grid cell,

3) whether gaps in the regional LFS time series could be filled by reattributing previous LFS respondents to the new NUTS regions.
