New York: On August 7, 2014, the European Regional Committee of the United Nations Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM: Europe) was created. This significant action is the third and final stage in a formation process that began in November 2012.
This endorsement confirms the UN-GGIM: Europe’s mandate to have increased and close cooperation and coordination with UN-GGIM at a global level and also with other existing institutional structures in Europe. Stefan Schweinfest, Director, United Nations Statistics Division said, “The new regional committee will be aligned to the global architecture, which will better address regional and global challenges especially in the context of sustainable development and humanitarian assistance.”
UN-GGIM: Europe will enable the transition towards an integrated agenda within the region and between the regional and the global levels. There are two main focus points that build on the issues already identified by the Committee of Experts: data definition and access conditions; and interoperability and data infrastructures for geospatial information supporting the goals of UN-GGIM.
UN-GGIM: Europe will hold its first meeting in Chisinau, Moldova on October 1, 2014 to elect its executive committee and create a draft work programme.
