The ESSnet project "GEOSTAT – representing census data in a European population grid” and the need for the gridded population data in the global level will be discussed.

Session 1 GEOSTAT WP 1: User needs

The main challenges in producing harmonised gridded population dataset are the differences in national geographic projections, grid coding systems, the data interoperability between statistics and spatial data, the different time spans of updating demographic data, data quality, confidentiality issues and others.
One of the main goals of GEOSTAT project is to find a best solution for users from one hand and for gridded population data producers from other hand. Therefore, the session “User needs” main emphasis will be put on presenting the user perspectives on their needs and on analyse of user needs for providing technically sound data specification for a harmonised transnational grid, integrating population statistics variables across national borders in Europe.

Session 2 GEOSTAT WP 2: Geostatistics

The main objective of the Geostat project is to provide a system of small area statistics liberated from administrative areas that may be used for spatial analysis in cross border situations. We will do this using a system of discrete grids. Ideally this should be based on point information but will in practice, for most types of socio-cultural and economic data, be based on disaggregation techniques as well. Thus, there are three types of approaches that countries adopt. Aggregation (from smaller grids or points), Disaggregation (from administrative areas) or Hybrid method (a mixture of both). The main emphasise of this session is to assess the opportunities for integrating the results of the national censuses into one harmonised dataset using these different approaches.

Infrastructure means the structure behind the data, not the data itself. It is the roads rather than the traffic on it of the pipelines rather than the water or sewage that is transported in it. We may talk about the real infrastructure (websites, servers, etc.) and virtual infrastructures (standards, concepts, etc.). In this context
we are talking about both of these.
